Box Score Richmond, Ind. – Junior forward Rachel Cox enjoyed another big night as the Transylvania women's basketball team picked up a road victory against the Earlham College Quakers with a 73-54 triumph on Wednesday night at Schuckman Court.
Cox provided the Pioneers with 26 points, eight rebounds, three steals, one assist, and one block in 34 minutes of play as the Pioneers improved to 9-3 overall, and 3-2 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference competition. The win was the Pioneers' fourth consecutive victory of the year, their longest streak of the season.
Transylvania outscored Earlham 40-25 in the second and third quarters to pull away for the 19-point victory, remaining unbeaten against the Quakers since Earlham joined the conference in 2010.
Sophomore guard Celia Kline, who entered the evening as the second-leading scorer in the HCAC, enjoyed an efficient night of 6-for-9 shooting from the field, including 3-for-5 shooting from three-point range; Kline entered the week ranked third in the nation in total 3-pointers made, and top-4 in the conference in three-point percentage, shooting better than 40 percent from deep.
Kline had 16 points on the evening including a team-high four assists, one rebound, and one assist.
The Pioneers' overall outside shooting cooled off this evening as the Pioneers shot 4-for-17 from beyond-the-arc, but still shot a sharp 47.2 percent overall from the floor. Sophomore guard Taylor Jackson contributed to the efficiency as the other double-digit scorer for the Pioneers as she shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the field to the tune of 11 points.
Earlham and Transylvania battled closely through most of the first half, as Earlham converted on a series of layups and runners to generate a 23-all tie with 6:23 left in the second quarter. After a layup from sophomore guard Macey Ford, the Pioneers took a 25-23 lead and never looked back.
Transylvania closed the first half on a 15-4 run, bolstered by nine points that came off of Earlham turnovers in that stretch. The Pioneers punctuated the run with a steal by sophomore guard Kristen Hayes in the final half minute of the half that led to a diagrammed jump shot from Jackson just before the halftime buzzer.
The Pioneers continued with a strong offensive third quarter, shooting 9-for-16 from the floor as they outscored Earlham 21 to 15. Cox enjoyed seven of her 26 in the quarter.
The final quarter was a defensive struggle that favored Transylvania, who forced Earlham into seven turnovers and 12 points in the final 10 minutes of play to pick up their ninth victory of the season. Transylvania held Earlham, who dropped to 0-5 in conference play and 0-12 overall, to 36.2 percent shooting from the field for the game and 24 turnovers on the evening.
Transylvania, who ranks fifth nationally in free-throw percentage, had another astute night from the line as it shot 19-for-22 from the charity stripe.
The Pioneers will continue their road trek as they next visit Defiance College on Saturday for another installment of HCAC play. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. from Defiance, Ohio.
