Career-high day for McCulley leads Pioneers to win in return to Lexington

Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – Freshman midfielder Brianna McCulley registered a career-high six goals for the Transylvania women's lacrosse team in an 18-9 win against the Mount St. Joseph Lions Wednesday afternoon at Pat Deacon Stadium.

McCulley's game-high six goals served as one of numerous standout performances for the Pioneers who enjoyed a consistently relentless offense on Wednesday.

Junior attack Julia Ward added four goals in the win for her sixth hat-trick of the season.

Transylvania improved to 7-1 overall, and 2-0 in the Ohio River Women's Lacrosse Conference standings to emerge victorious in its first home game in over three weeks.

The Lions struck first to take a 1-0 lead on a long run from Anna Thorner in the first half-minute of the contest, but the Pioneers responded with six unanswered goals to take clear control of the game. Sophomore midfielder Bailee Stevens led the response with the first two scores for Transylvania, and Ward notched her first goal of the day on a free position shot with 23:47 left in the first half to hand Transy a 3-1 advantage.

McCulley then followed with her first goal of the day with 23 minutes to go for a 4-1 lead. McCulley went on to score three more goals in the first half as the Pioneers took a 13-5 advantage into halftime.

A physical game became more even in the second half as the Pioneers outscored the Lions 6 to 4.

The Pioneers made the most of their success in the fan, going 5-for-12 on free position shots. Transylvania was also successful in the game of possession, clearing 36 of 43 rides.

Ward had a team-high two assists to go with her four goals, and added four ground balls and four draw controls in her all-around performance.

In addition to McCulley's six goals, the freshman added five ground balls, five draw controls, and six of the team's 11 caused turnovers.

Along with Stevens, sophomore midfielder Emma Oliver and sophomore attack Alexis Rubin each added two goals as the Pioneers completed an undefeated month of March, going 6-0 over that span.

The Pioneers are next in action on Sunday, April 2 as they play host to Saint Vincent University at 1:00 p.m. in a key conference matchup. The game is set for a 1:00 p.m. start at Pat Deacon Stadium.
