Johnston's career-high seven goals leads Transylvania women's lacrosse to win at Bridgewater (Va.)

Box Score

Bridgewater, Va. – Rachel Johnston turned in a career-high seven goals to lead the Transylvania women's lacrosse team to a 12-9 victory over the Bridgewater College Eagles on Thursday evening at the Jopson Athletic Complex.

Transylvania emerged with a 6-2 record following the victory as the Pioneers completed a 2-1 spring break week while claiming its second win away from home this season.

The Pioneers held a thin 3-2 lead at the half before outscoring Bridgewater, 9-7 in the second half, spurred on by Johnston's scoring outburst.

Bridgewater signaled its signs of home comfort to open up the match, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game before the Pioneers settled into their offensive rhythm.

Emma Oliver set up Brianna McCulley for the first of her five assists of the game with 21:14 left in the first half, cutting Bridgewater's advantage to 2-1. Courtney Pontious scored a tying goal with 18:56 left in the half while McCulley scored her second goal of the day with under 11 minutes remaining to put the Pioneers in front for good at 3-2.

Transylvania continued a five-goal run out of the halftime break as Pontious scored her second goal at the 28:16 mark of the second half and Johnston scored her first goal of the day with 25:36 remaining on an assist from Oliver, raising Transylvania's lead to 5-2.

Bridgewater ended the run with a Kristen Stark goal at the 25:05 juncture of the second half before Johnston put up her second goal of the day for a 6-3 lead.

The Eagles continued to nip at the Pioneers as they scored again, but Johnston scored the next three straight goals for Transylvania to hand the Pioneers a 9-5 advantage with 11:50 to go. Pontious scored once more while Johnston was assisted twice more by Oliver and Olivia Livingston to keep the Pioneers out in front of Bridgewater.

Pontious finished the game with a hat-trick and a game-high seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. Mackenzie Dent picked up the win in goal for Transylvania with 13 saves in a full 60 minutes of work. Salem Carlow paced the Pioneers with five draw controls.

Transylvania returns to play on Sunday, March 24 to host St. Vincent College at Pat Deacon Stadium. Transylvania and St. Vincent will square off at 1:00 p.m. in Lexington.
