Mequon, Wis. - The Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons used a first-quarter outburst against the Transylvania field hockey team to hand the Pioneers a 6-0 defeat on Sunday morning at Tomasini Field.
Â
Aiming to return to the favor to the Falcons after a thin 1-0 defeat the day before in their designated conference match, the Pioneers started the match on high energy, capitalizing off of a quick turnover by the Falcons with a strong run up the field by
Kayla Bushman and Mirabel Noltmeyer .The duo worked together to secure a penalty corner within the first five minutes of the quarter. Concordia staved off Transy's shot attempt, eventually leading to an opening goal the other way from the Falcons' Olivia Riemer for a 1-0 Concordia lead.
Â
Transylvania maintained a steady back-and-forth gameplay within the midfield, keeping the ball from their defensive 25. Concordia was able to find its way inside, attempting a shot on goal that was knocked out by Pioneer keeper
Libby Bringard. But another quick shot and successful goal was obtained by Paige Armijo at the 2-minute mark of the first quarter as the hosts doubled up their lead.
Â
The Pioneers continued an aggressive attack against the Falcons, securing three successive offensive penalty corners. Despite strong control of the quarter, Transylvania allowed a Falcon goal in the last 10 seconds of the half, translating into a 3-0 halftime deficit.
Â
The second half witnessed a defensive display from Concordia as the Pioneers repeated shots on goal were thwarted at the final line of defense by the Falcons. Transylvania refused to cease in its offensive pushes, with Noltemeyer taking the ball upfield to set up Bushman for a shot on cage. The Falcons came up with a stop and subsequently registered their fourth goal of the day to seize control. Â
Â
Catherine Harney led the Pioneers with two shots on goal while Bringard totaled five saves on Sunday.
Â
The Pioneers take a break from the road to host the Centre College Colonels next Saturday, October 23. The Senior Night match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start at Pat Deacon Stadium in Lexington.
