Box Score

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania field hockey team was outscored by the Centre College Colonels, 5-0 on Saturday evening at Pat Deacon Stadium in their annual conference contest.

Playing in their final home regular season match of the fall 2021 campaign, the Pioneers began the night by celebrating the four-year careers of seniors Kyndra Miller-Greene and Sidney Varney before embarking on the second overall showdown of the season against the archrival Colonels.

The Pioneers rode the momentum of the pregame ceremony by blanking the Colonels in the first quarter, playing Centre to a scoreless tie in the first 15 minutes. With Varney anchoring the defense on her senior night, the Pioneers fended off five penalty corner opportunities as Centre continue to come up empty.

The Colonels found their footing in the second quarter, scoring the go-ahead goal nearly two minutes into the quarter, and doubled the score midway through the period. The Colonels tacked on a third score with 90 seconds to go before the halftime break to establish a steady cushion.

After a fourth goal by the Colonels at the two-thirds mark of the contest, the Pioneers manifested an offensive opportunity by forcing a turnover at midfield. The Colonels failed to clear and Catherine Harney handled the ball in the open field, eventually taking aim on goal. Harney beat the final Centre defender and took aim on goal, but the left side shot was parried away by the Colonels goalkeeper, holding the Pioneers without a score.

Varney had a steady night in goal for Transylvania, corralling 12 saves on 17 shots faced.

The Colonels improved to 3-0 in Southern Athletic Association play and 12-2 overall while the Pioneers dropped to 0-16 overall.

Transylvania will round up its regular season schedule with a nonconference match against the Oberlin College Yeowomen on the road in Oberlin, Ohio. Transylvania will face off against Oberlin next Sunday, October 31 at 1:00 p.m. at Dick Bailey Field.
