Transylvania women's basketball unleash defensive clinic in Senior Day win over Bluffton

Lexington, Ky. - The Transylvania women's basketball team displayed a Senior Day performance to remember in a 74-57 victory over the Bluffton Beavers at the Clive M. Beck Center on Saturday afternoon.

Transylvania celebrated four seniors before exacting revenge upon the Beavers from a loss up north in Bluffton the evening before with a double-digit win in its home finale to end the regular season with an 11-6 overall record and a 9-3 record against conference opponents.

Dasia Thornton led the Pioneers in scoring with 16 points, shooting 7 for 10 overall. Thornton also brought down seven rebounds. Zenoviah Walker added 12 points on 5 for 8 shooting from the field and match a season-high with seven assists. Calynn Jackson hit three 3-pointers and grabbed three rebounds for a nine-point afternoon in her senior day showing.

The Pioneers came out of the gates quickly with a floater in the lane from Walker. On the following defensive possession, Miranda Otero dove to the floor to secure a steal and came down the floor to knock down a threeball to give the Pioneers a 5-2 around two minutes into the first quarter.

With 3:07 left in the quarter, Thornton fought for an offensive rebound and put it back up for the bucket plus a trip to the free throw line and hit the free throw, extending the Transy lead to 16-8. Buckets scored in the paint from Grace Shope and Laken Ball gave the Pioneers a 20-10 lead over the Beavers to close out the first quarter.

Transylvania began the second quarter picking up from where it left off in the first with a steal from Thornton, leading to a runner in the lane from Brooke Nottingham. An Elizabeth Hardiman bucket in the paint forced the Beavers to use an early second quarter timeout as Transy increased the lead to 24-10 with 8:58 left.

Exiting the timeout, Thornton continued to be an issue at the offensive end with a score from the painted area and soon thereafter knocked down a three-pointer to grow the lead 29-14 a little over two minutes into the second quarter.  The Pioneers went on a quick 7-0 run off of two quick buckets from Walker and a Madison Kellione three pointer to extend the lead 36-16 with 6:25 left in the half.

Thornton converted on a bucket in the final seconds of the quarter to hand the Pioneers a 49-31 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Jackson knocked down her second three-pointer of the game just over two minutes into the second half. Walker scored in the lane and the Pioneer lead was extended to 54-37 with 5:57 left in the third quarter. With 4:20 left in the third. a Thornton layup assisted by Laken Ball pushed the Pioneers to a 20-point lead. In the final minute of the quarter, Kennedi Stacy banked in a jumper and Thornton struck once more from inside to provide Transylvania with a 62-40 lead after three quarters.

Kellione started the final quarter aggressive, knocking down a shot from beyond the arc off of a dribble handoff from Walker ten seconds into the quarter. Walker quickly followed her backcourt partner, hitting her own jumper to grow the Pioneer lead to 69-44 with 5:50 left. Walker's seventh assist came on a Nottingham floater in the lane. Grace Bringard's blocked shot at the defensive end led to a jumper by Stacy to increase the lead 74-49 with 2:53 left in the game.

Transylvania held the Beavers to 31 percent shooting from the field while shooting 47 percent from the field. The Pioneers had 19 assists and enjoyed 39 points off the bench. The Pioneers also won the battle in the paint, outscoring the Beavers 38-28.
