Transylvania women's lacrosse collects first win of 2021 at Birmingham-Southern

Birmingham, Ala. – Seven different Pioneers scored as the Transylvania women's lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the season, a 13-10 win over the Birmingham-Southern College Panthers at General Krulak Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Pioneers' record improves to 1-2 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 1-3.

Courtney Pontious led the way with four goals on the day, marking the third straight contest to open the season with a hat-trick. 

Ysa Leon gave the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead with a free position goal following a Birmingham-Southern foul.

After a Panther goal, Pontious scored and assisted a Rachel Johnston scoring strike to give Transylvania a 3-1 lead.

The Pioneers ended the half with six straight goals from Pontious, Salem Carlow, Linley Dawson, Abbey Peterson to take a commanding 9-2 lead at the halftime break.

Despite the deficit, the Panthers came charging back with three straight goals to open the half, trimming the Transylvania lead to 9-5.

The Pioneers responded with back-to-back goals from Leon and Pontious to extend Transylvania's lead to a six-goal margin at the 18:38 mark of the second half.

Late in the game, Birmingham-Southern mounted a 5-2 run, but the Pioneer defense held strong in clinching the 13-10 victory.

Transylvania's defense was crucial to its victory on Saturday as the Pioneers collected 27 ground balls compared to just 13 for the Panthers. The Pioneers also were also successful on 17 of their 23 clearance attempts in the win.

Transylvania next returns to Lexington for a matchup against the Georgetown College Tigers on Saturday, March 6. Opening draw between the Pioneers and the Tigers is set for 7:30 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.
