Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's lacrosse team used a trio of four-goal scorers to flood out the Anderson University Ravens, 21-5 in a dominant offensive effort at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The victory moves the Pioneers up to 9-4 overall on the year and a perfect 4-0 in Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference play. Anderson drops to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in HCLC contests.
On a soggy day in Lexington, the opening minutes saw both sides struggle to get a foothold in the conditions. Anderson opened the scoring with the first goal of the day six minutes into the contest, but
Courtney Pontious immediately replied with a goal of her own 15 seconds later with 23:55 remaining in the half to tie up the game at 1-1.
Pontious' breakthrough sparked the Pioneers as
Salem Carlow and RJ Johnston scored back-to-back free-position goals to extend the lead to 3-1.
Abbey Peterson slotted a pair of goals into the back of the net while Johnston netted her second to complete a 5-2 run and push the Pioneers in front, 6-3 with 10:16 remaining in the first half.
The floodgates then opened as Pontious, Johnston, and Peterson rifled two more goals apiece home to complete first-half hat tricks for the trio. Carlow continued to attack by executing another goal while
Eve Fox scored her fourth of the year to propel the Pioneers to 13-3 advantage at halftime.
Transylvania opened the second half with the same pressure that ended the first half.
Ysa Leon took a feed from Pontious to tally her first goal and then delivered two assists to
Mandi Rider and Pontious in the ensuing minutes to jumpstart the half for the Pioneers.
Vianne Koshoffer finished off a beautiful team goal for the Pioneers as she calmly slotted her third goal of the year home, raising the home team lead to 17-3 with the second half only seven minutes old.
Lindy Walker found the weak spot in the Anderson defense and struck the back of the net to vault the Pioneers in front, 19-3 with 19:23 remaining.
Carlow dazzled from the attack as she pushed through the defense and drove two more goals home.
Linley Dawson completed the scoring by delivering an unassisted strike past the goalkeeper for the 21
st goal of the day with nine minutes remaining. Anderson scored two late goals as the Pioneers claimed a 21-3 victory.
The Pioneers held Anderson scoreless from the 8:59 mark in the first half until the 2:13 mark in the second half. Transylvania dominated the offensive half of the field by outshooting Anderson 40-12 throughout the contest.
Carlow had another career day by matching a season-high eight points off her four goals.
Courtney Pontious and RJ Johnston had matching performances with each scoring four goals while delivering one assist.
The Pioneers will launch their postseason campaign with the HCAC Tournament semifinal match on Wednesday, April 28
th at Pat Deacon Stadium. The conference No. 1 seed Pioneers will open up against tournament No. 4 seed Mount St. Joseph University with a draw time to be announced.
