Cincinnati, Ohio –
Courtney Pontious scored four goals as the Transylvania women's lacrosse team opened Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference play with a rousing 21-4 victory over the Mount St. Joseph University Lions at Schueler Field on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Pioneers' record improves to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the HCLC while Mount St. Joseph falls to 1-1 in league play and 1-2 overall.
The explosive Transylvania offense was led by
RJ Johnston, who tallied three goals and five assists, and
Salem Carlow, who scored three goals and added three assists. Carlow also collected a team-high six draw controls in the victory.
Transylvania burst out of the gate with a flurry of eight goals scored by six different Pioneers across the first 14 minutes of action.
After a mini-rally by the Lions,
Ysa Leon and
Mandi Rider each added back-to-back goals in the waning moments of the half, giving Transylvania a 13-2 lead at the halftime break.
Pontious and Carlow opened the second half with four straight Transylvania goals, expanding the lead to 17-4 with just over 20 minutes remaining on the clock.
With the result of the game no longer in question,
Eve Fox and
Vianne Koshoffer each scored to cap off the 21-4 Transylvania victory.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Friday, April 9, for a nonconference matchup against the DePauw University Tigers. Transylvania will celebrate three seniors from the Class of 2020 and five members from its current senior class in a senior day celebration to precede the nonconference contest at Pat Deacon Stadium scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
