No. 9 Transylvania volleyball swept by Concordia Wisconsin in Chicago finale

Chicago, Ill. – The No. 9 Transylvania volleyball team was upended by the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons in three sets on Sunday afternoon to wrap up its weekend trip to the University of Chicago's Ratner Athletics Center.

The Falcons jumped out to a fast start on Sunday and never looked back, handing the Pioneers a 25-12, 25-21, 25-21 loss. The Pioneers dropped to 5-3 on the season while the Falcons stayed undefeated in their early campaign, moving to 3-0 overall.

Cate Scheper led the way for Transylvania on Sunday with a match-high nine kills along with three blocks and an ace. Grace Ward paced all players with 19 assists while Sylvie Miller led the Pioneers in digs with 14.

The Falcons came out swinging in the first set to the tune of 16 kills against two errors, earning a 25-12 win against the Pioneers. The Falcons then used an early 6-0 run to grab a 6-1 lead in set number two. Transy swung back to tie up the set at 9-9 and climbed out to a 14-10 advantage as the Falcons struggled to cleanly return the ball. But Concordia Wisconsin had another 5-0 run in its pocket to grab a 19-15 advantage, staying ahead of Transylvania for the rest of the set for a 2-0 match lead.

The Falcons were primed to put the match away early in the third with a 12-4 advantage, but Transylvania stood firm, battling back within a point at 20-19 later on in the set. But the Falcons closed the match with a 5-2 run to hand the Pioneers their first sweep of the season.

Following a season-opening stretch of eight straight matches away from home, the Pioneers will finally enjoy their home opener this Wednesday, September 15 in Lexington against the Maryville College (Tenn.) Scots. Opening serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Clive M. Beck Center.
