Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's lacrosse team displayed a strong effort against the DePauw University Tigers at Pat Deacon Stadium Saturday afternoon but ultimately were defeated 14-11.
The Pioneers were the first to strike with a goal coming four minutes in from Mandi Rider, but the Tigers quickly answered with two quick goals to forge a 2-1 lead early in the contest. The Pioneers evened the score from a Linley Dawson goal, but Depauw scored again on their very next attack to reclaim the lead. They added to it with two more goals in the quarter to go up 5-2. Faced with a three-goal deficit as the first quarter winded down, Transy scored twice in the final twelve seconds to make it a 5-4 contest.
In the second quarter, the Pios kept up their momentum and quickly tied the score courtesy of Abbey Peterson just 20 seconds in. Peterson buried another at the 9:30 mark to give the Pioneers the lead. DePauw eventually struck back after a scoreless 8 minutes, making it a 6-6 tie game. The Tigers were not done there and found the back of the net twice more in the final minute of the half to make it an 8-6 score at the midway point.
DePauw notched another tally early in the third to build a 9-6 lead, but the Pioneers fought right back with two of their own in just over two minutes. The one goal deficit didn't last long for Transy, as the Tigers scored again 40 seconds later to make it 10-8. Transy found a major response in the form of three unanswered goals, from Charlotte Green and two from Mandi Rider. The outburst gave Transylvania an 11-10 lead going into the fourth.
The Tigers came out into the fourth period and struck first to tie it up again, 11-11. In a back and forth battle, it was clear both teams were going to fight hard for the win. Depauw scored a twelth goal at the 10:23 mark in the fourth, taking the lead by one before a timeout by Transylvania. Depauw went on to score two more goals as the Pios struggled to find the back of the net.
After a strong performance by the Pioneers, matching Depauw goal for goal, their bid for another comeback ran out of time as Transylvania fell for a final score of 14-11. The Pioneers look to bounce back on Monday March 14 against North Central at Pat Deacon Stadium with a 7:00 PM scheduled start.
