LEXINGTON, KY - The Pioneers get a huge bounce back win against non conference opponent on Monday night. Transy defeated Sewanee 1-0 at Pat Deacon Stadium.
Transylvania's fast pace of play to start the game has been a key for the Pioneers all season. To begin the first period, Transy's offense earned a penalty corner just a minute into the game. Just five minutes into the period, Transylvania's Sidney Alridge struck first and found the back of the net. The teams went back and forth, trying to gain momentum. Senior goalie, Libby Bringard made her first save of the game to end the first period.
Beginning in the second period, Isabelle Stuckey had a shot go just wide. The following minutes included two saves by Libby Bringard. Sewanee nearly found the back of the net with two back to back shots, but met the Transy defense; saves were made by Bringard and defender Grace Smilek. The half ended with both teams having chances on goal, both goalies making saves, and penalty corners being exchanged.
Sewanee began to press the Transylvania defense in the third period with three shots and two penalty corners in the first 10 minutes. Transy found its first shot in the third period, at the 41st minute mark. A shot on goal by Avery Hoover started the fourth period. Sewanee's offense continued to press with three shots and a penalty corner in the following three minutes. The Transylvania defense continued to be a solid wall in the closing minutes, despite Sewanee having five shots and five penalty corners to close out the game.
"This was a huge win against a skillful team! Our hard work in practice is paying off and it is beginning to show on the field. It was great to see our team come together and get a great team win." stated Coach Natalie Hernandez.
The Pioneers are looking forward to their next home match against NCAC opponent The College of Wooster. The game begins at 12 PM on Saturday, October 12th at Pat Deacon Stadium. The Pioneers are celebrating their Senior Day on Sunday the 27th at 1 PM, against Oberlin College.
