ST. LOUIS, MO - Transylvania University closed their weekend at the McWilliams Classic on Saturday, defeating Lyon 110-54.Â
Transy opened with their offense on full display, outscoring Lyon 32-9 in the first quarter.
Sadie Wurth led the Pioneers with 21 points, she scored three three-point field goals in the opening quarter to lead the strong start for Transy.
Sierra Kemelgor,
McLain Murphy and
Riley Flinn also recorded a three-point field goal in the opening quarter. Transy continued to shine defensively in the second quarter, holding Lyon to 23% shooting from the field in the second, the Pioneers outscored Lyon 22-9 in the second period to lead 54-18 at the half. The strong performance would continue into the second half, with the Pioneers recording five three-point field goals in the third period to lead 82-33 entering the fourth quarter.
Mackenzie Lombardi and
Makya Grinter scored from three-point range in the final two minutes to secure the 110-54 win for Transylvania.Â
Wurth's seven three pointers for 21 points led the Pioneers, Kemelgor recorded six steals in addition to her 12 points and five assists. Flinn added 14 points and eight rebounds, Grinter added eleven points. Transylvania's bench scored 55 points, highlighted by eleven from Grinter and nine each from
Grace Bruner and
Chloe McKnight.Â

Hannah Varel was proud to see the total team effort for the Pioneers in the bounce back victory at the McWilliams Classic.Â
"Truest definition of a team win," Varel said. "We bounced back after a hard fought game last night and we were ready to compete from the tip. Our offense is starting to click at the right time as we head into conference play."
