Men's Tennis beat Otterbein, move to 3-1 on the season

2/4/2024 8:34:00 PM

LEXINGTON- The Transy Men's Tennis team improved to 3-1 on the season with a 7-2 win against visiting Otterbein College at Top Seed Tennis Club. The win avenges a 5-4 loss to the Cardinals during the 2022-2023 season.

The doubles started with a bang for the Pioneers, as all three courts jumped out to early leads. The teams of Arjun Gupta/Chris Kaufmann (#1) and Jared Wells/Jacob Jiranek (#3) were able to hold the momentum for identical 8-1 victories. The #2 doubles team of Jordan Cordrey/Eli Skaggs worked their way into a deciding tiebreak but fell 8-7 (5).

With a 2-1 advantage heading into the singles competition, the Pioneers again struck first. First set wins on five of the six courts gave Transy a path to the victory. The first point was claimed at #3 singles when Alejandro Perez-Canedo polished off a  solid 6-1, 6-2 win to put the Pioneers up 3-1. Chase Moreman struck next, winning at #5 singles 6-3, 6-2. That court's victory placed the home team one point away from a team victory.

The next three matches finished almost simultaneously. Chris Kaufmann (#1 singles) won a tight match 7-6, 6-2. At the same time, both Jacob Jiranek (#4 singles) and Jordan Cordrey (#6 singles) were completing their wins. With one match still on court the dual match was clinched at a 7-1 advantage for the Pioneers.

The last match required more than 90 minutes more than the second longest match to reach a conclusion. In a contest that took over three hours to complete, Eli Skaggs dropped a 6-0, 6-7, 1-0 thriller to complete the 7-2 victory.

The Pioneers will next be in action February 9-11 at their Pioneer Invitational.
