COLUMBUS, Ohio. - The Transylvania Women's Basketball team's historic run came to end on Thursday night. After going 733 days without a loss, which included 64 wins, two Elite Eights, two Final Fours, and one National Championship, the Pioneers suffered a heartbreaking loss to New York University in the 2024 NCAA DIII Final Four, 42-57.
Transylvania trailed 8-13 with twelve seconds to go in the first quarter, but made it a one possession game after
Sadie Wurth drilled a three pointer before the quarter ended.
The Pioneers struggled in the second quarter, and were held to only two points over an eight minute span. With three seconds left,
Dasia Thornton drained a three pointer to cut into the NYU deficit. Transy trailed 16-31 after being outscored 5-18 in the second quarter.
Transylvania fought hard against the unbeaten Violets in the second half, outscoring NYU 13-11 to bring the deficit to thirteen with ten minutes to go in the game. NYU opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run to extend their lead to eighteen. Transy countered by scoring seven of the next nine points to cut the deficit to twelve with 4:08 to play. With 2:20 to play,
Sadie Wurth brought the NYU lead down to ten for the first time since the second quarter, but TU couldn't cut it any further as NYU quickly brought their lead back to sixteen points with over a minute to play.
The Pioneers suffered their first loss since March 12th, 2022 when they lost to Trine in the 2022 NCAA Elite Eight. Since the beginning of the 2022 season, Transy has won 91 games (89-2).
Dasia Thornton led Transy in scoring with 18 points. She grabbed 7 rebounds, which earned Thornton her 1000th career rebound. She is the second Pioneer to earn 1000 rebounds and 1000 career points.
Kennedi Stacy finished with 8 points and 8 rebounds.
Sadie Wurth finished with 7 points and 4 rebounds.
The Pioneers finish the 2023-2024 season in the NCAA Final Four with a 31-1 record.
