TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA - Three Pioneers reached double figure scoring in a 71-48 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) victory on Saturday for Transylvania.Â
The Pioneers opened the first quarter with a strong offensive run as two three-point field goals from
Sadie Wurth and a three-pointer from
Riley Flinn contributed to a 15-6 Transylvania lead early in the first quarter. Flinn ended the first quarter with five straight successful baskets at the free-throw line in the final 01:25 of the opening period for a 20-11 lead.
Makya Grinter and
Chloe McKnight alternated field goals to start the second quarter and continue the strong offensive start for Transylvania. Wurth knocked down her third three-pointer of the afternoon in the final two minutes of the half, the Pioneers carried a 34-20 lead into the break.
Rose-Hulman struck first in the second half as the third quarter began, but
Sierra Kemelgor would respond with consecutive field goals to help Transylvania maintain their distance. Reagan Barrett scored eight points in the third quarter, including a fast break lay-up in the final minute of the third quarter to extend the Transylvania lead to 28 entering the fourth.
Samantha Cornelison opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, followed by a lay-up at the basket from McClain Murphy. A basket from
Keaton Hall and a lay-up from
Aubree Littlejohn pushed the Transylvania lead to 31 in the opening three minutes of the fourth. Cornelison would knock down her second three-pointer of the quarter with less than a minute remaining en route to Transylvania earning the road HCAC victory 71-48.Â
