LEXINGTON, KY - Transylvania University has advanced to the finals of the 2025 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Tournament, defeating Anderson 70-51.Â
After trailing early, the Pioneers rallied in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 32-26 at the half behind several strong defensive possessions creating offensive opportunities. Sadie Wurth drove to the basket, drawing the foul and earning the extra point at the free throw line. With 1:05 remaining in the first half, Riley Flinn scored on a put back at the rim, followed by a drive to the basket from Makya Grinter to close the half.Â
Flinn scored on a fast break opportunity to start the second half, followed by a three-point play from Grinter. Sierra Kemelgor drove through the defense with a layup at the basket to keep the Pioneers within three, but it was a three-pointer from Reagan Barrett that tied the score at 41-41. With 3:07 remaining in the third quarter, Grinter knocked down a three-pointer to take the lead for the Pioneers.Â
Trailing one after three quarters, the Pioneers started the fourth with another three-pointer as Grinter found Kemelgor in the corner for an open look. Wurth drove to the basket on the next play to extend the Pioneers lead to 53-49. After another drive from Wurth, Barrett scored her second three-pointer of the half to give the Pioneers their largest lead of the game. Kemelgor scored at the basket, followed by another field goal from Wurth. Grinter scored another three-pointer to put it away for Transylvania, defeating Anderson 70-51.Â
Sierra Kemelgor led the Pioneers with a double double, recording 22 points and 14 rebounds. Sadie Wurth followed with 17 points, Makya Grinter added 16 points and six rebounds. Transylvania outscored Anderson 20-4 in points off turnovers and 13-4 in fast break opportunities.Â
Transylvania will face the winner of Hanover and MSJ at 3:00 p.m. at the Clive M. Beck Center Saturday for the 2025 HCAC Championship.Â
