LEXINGTON, KY. — The Transylvania University volleyball team battled Centre College on Wednesday night at the Clive M. Beck Center, falling to the Colonels in four sets, 13-25, 26-24, 20-25, 18-25. The loss moved the Pioneers to 2-6 on the season.
After Centre took the opening set 25-13, Transylvania responded in a tightly contested second set. The Pioneers came away with a 26-24 victory to even the match at one set apiece. Centre regained control with a 25-20 win in the third before closing out the match 25-18 in the fourth.
Addie Atcher and Payton Avilez led the Transylvania attack with 16 kills apiece. Atcher added three digs and two block assists, while Avilez finished with four digs and a block assist. Cecelia Roberts recorded five kills on 10 attacks, hitting .400 while adding two block assists and a service ace.
Erin Thomas directed the Pioneer offense with 32 assists while adding seven digs, two block assists and a service ace. Julia Brown contributed a team-high 24 digs along with five assists and a service ace, while Megan Helander finished with 16 digs and Soleil Sabin added 13. Reece Houston recorded two of Transylvania's six service aces and added eight digs. As a team, Transylvania finished with 39 kills, 39 assists, six service aces and 78 digs. The Pioneers hit .081 for the match, with their strongest offensive set coming in the second when they recorded 16 kills on 40 attacks and hit .250.
Up next for Transylvania is a trip to Georgia for the Berry Invitational this weekend. Transylvania takes on Oglethorpe to kick off the weekend on Friday at 4:30 p.m., followed by Emory and Randolph-Macon on Saturday.
