Georgetown, Ky. - The Transylvania eventing team started off the season on home turf at the Kentucky Horse Park this past weekend at the Jump Start Horse Trials. The season-opening event for the 2018-19 eventing season featured 13 teams, including the University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, Randolph-Macon College (Va.), Otterbein University (Ohio), and University of Findlay (Ohio).
Five team members from Transylvania eventing competed in the Intercollegiate Team Challenge, which spanned Friday through Sunday. Junior Stevee Candrl tackled a muddy preliminary cross country course with a clean jump round and a bit of time.
Sophomore Amanda Haw performed a nice double clear run in show jumping in the novice division. Senior Jessie Dees finished on her dressage score with double clear rounds in both the show jumping and cross country competitions to land in fifth place in the beginner novice division.
Senior Abby Blackburn had the only double clear show jump round in her division along with a double clear in cross country to place second in a competitive novice division. Freshman Maddie Cease had to pull her horse Charlie from the competition as he was not feeling well.
The Jump Start Horse Trials are hosted every September at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington and has increased in scope and ridership each year, with cross country course expansion being one of the key areas of growth for the event.
The Pioneers eventing team looks to come out strong next on November 10-11, as they compete in the River Glen Horse Trials in New Market, Tennessee.
