DANVILLE, Ky.—Junior Maddie King led the way with a hat trick, as the Transylvania University field hockey team opened its season with a 5-2 victory against Earlham College in a match played at Centre College.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead on King's goal in the fourth minute. It was the first in a string of goals for King, who also recorded goals in the 55th and 58th minute for a hat trick on the day.
After King's first goal, senior midfielder Sara Clark scored in the 22nd minute to give Transylvania a 2-0 lead. The Quakers of Earlham closed the half strongly, however with two goals by Kaitlyn Brunner in the 29th and 30th minutes. Senior goalkeeper Sara Aschbacher played a strong match, allowing only two goals on eight shots, earning her first win of the season.
The Pioneers dominated on both the offensive and defensive side of the field, nearly doubling the number of shot attempts and shots on goal of Earlham. Transylvania posted 25 shots in the match, with 15 on target, to Earlham's 14 shots and eight on target. In addition to dominating shot attempts, the Pioneers had 14 penalty corner attempts in the match in comparison to Earlham's seven.
The second half, however, was all Transylvania. Senior Macaulay Schifferdecker opened up the scoring in the 47th minute before King capped off the scoring later in the match. Head coach Sarah Humphries said she was pleased with her team's performance.
"We played to the whistle and played as a team and for each other I couldn't have asked for anything more from them," Humphries said. Humphries praised the team effort and freshman Jessica Chandler. "(Jessica) played phenomenal in her first collegiate game," Humphries said.
Headed into the rest of the season, Humphries is excited to see where the team will finish, noting "this is a great starting point for us."
The Pioneers (1-0) will play their next match on Sept. 2 in a home match against Washington and Lee (1-0).
