FROSTBURG, Md. –Kenyon College handed the Transylvania University field hockey team its third consecutive loss Sunday in a 5-0 win in the consolation game of the Frostburg State University tournament.
Kenyon's swarming defense kept the Pioneer offense at bay, allowing only five shots in the contest. Despite allowing only one goal in the first half, the Ladies tallied 16 shots while holding the Pioneers without a shot. The Pioneers recorded only five shots in the contest, all of which came in the closing minutes of play.
Despite the difference in shots the Pioneer defense held Kenyon to a 1-0 lead in the first half, but the depth of Kenyon helped propel the Ladies over the Pioneers.
The Ladies of Kenyon extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal less than two minutes into the second half and added to their lead with three more goals in a 20-minute span to go on to a 5-0 win.
"We saw good communication and effort from our girls," head coach Sarah Humphries said. "Towards the end of the second half, our defense stepped hard to the ball which had been a focus in practice."
The Pioneers (1-3) travel to Wooster College Sept. 14. The game is slated for 1 p.m.
