Despite relentless effort, Warriors top Pioneers 3-0 in SAA matchup

CONWAY, Ark.—Transylvania goalkeeper Sara Aschbacher and the Pioneer defense limited the high scoring Hendrix offense to three goals Saturday in a 3-0 loss at Warrior Field.

Aschbacher, the Southern Athletic Association leader in saves, grabbed 20 saves in Saturday's conference match, 12 of which came in the first half. Hendrix, however, was able to get on the board in the 14th minute, as Madi Reese found the net to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Reese's goal capped off a lengthy possession for the Warriors stemming from a penalty corner at the  12:25 mark. The Hendrix offense generated four shots on the possession, including the goal from Reese.

The Transylvania offense was persistent, continually attacking Gabryele Pochron and the Hendrix defense. Jessica Chandler nearly found the net in the 17th minute, but a deflection by a Hendrix defender kept the Pioneers off the board. Minutes later a shot from Sara Clark and Faye Katz dealt shots toward Pochron, but to no avail as the Warriors held a slim 1-0 lead at the end of one.

Hendrix's Rachyl Reger logged her ninth goal of the season, a SAA best, in the opening minutes of the second half extending the Warrior lead to 2-0, but the Pioneer offense remained determined.

Transylvania earned a penalty corner off as a ball shot from Chandler rolled out of play. After Maddie King put the ball backinto play, the Transylvania offense rattled three shots in a span of 13 seconds all of which were scooped by Pochron. Hendrix logged 11 penalty corner to six by the Pioneers.

The Pioneers tallied eight more shots before time expired, including a ball of the post as time wound down.

Transylvania squares off against Rhodes College Sunday in another SAA match. Sunday's match is slated for 1:00 p.m.
