Field hockey celebrates Senior Day, posts strong showing against Hendrix

LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Transylvania University field hockey team posted a strong effort on Sunday afternoon, but were unable to pull out a victory against conference opponent Hendrix College, losing 3-2.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half, with two goals in the first 20 minutes of the match.

Senior midfielder Sara Clark put Transy up 1-0 at the 15:36 mark, dribbling through a crowd of defenders and beating the goalkeeper in the bottom left corner of the cage. Junior midfielder Kayla Thurlow gave the Pioneers a 20 lead when she netted her first goal of the season in the 20th minute of the match.

Hendrix would rally, however, to score three unanswered goals to take the lead and win the match. They would close the first half with a goal in the 31st minute before scoring goals at the 45:04 and 51:39 marks in the second period.

The match was evenly contested throughout, as both teams managed to take 11 shots on the day; Hendrix had six shots on goal to Transy's four. Each team committed a total of 46 fouls, while the Pioneers' 10 penalty corners was one more than Hendrix took in the match. Senior goalkeeper Sara Aschbacher recorded three saves in the game.

The game marked the end of the Pioneers' regular season. They finished the regular season 1-14 and with a Southern Athletic Association record of 0-8. The team will travel to Danville, Ky. on Nov. 7 for the SAA Tournament, where they will have a rematch with Hendrix at 7:00 PM
