DANVILLE, Ky.—The Transylvania University field hockey team fell to Hendrix College in the first round of the Southern Athletic Association tournament on Friday night by a score of 3-0. The loss marked the end of the Pioneers' season.
Hendrix snatched the lead early in the match on a goal from Lotte Kraaijenbrink at the 2:57 mark. The Transy defense would stiffen, however, keeping them in the game and providing opportunities for the offense to score.
After giving up 14 shot attempts in the first 35 minutes, the Pioneers went to the locker room having only allowed the one Warrior goal. The second half saw much of the same, as Hendrix again took 14 shots.
Kraaijenbrink picked up her second goal of the match in the 53rd minute and recorded an assist on Bailee Wallace's 58th minute score.
The three Warrior goals proved to be too much for the Pioneer offense to overcome. Despite eight shots attempts, Transylvania was unable to beat the Hendrix goalkeeper and was shutout in the match.
All told, the Pioneers were outshot by a wide margin of 28-8, including 19 shots on goal from Hendrix to only three from Transylvania. Hendrix also took four more penalty corners than the Pioneers, tallying 10 to the Transy six.
Transylvania was led in shot attempts by senior midfielder Sara Clark, sophomore midfielder Shelby Perkins and junior defender Kayla Thurlow, who each recorded two shots in the match. Senior Pioneer goalie Sara Aschbacher picked up 16 saves in the match.
The loss of the first round matchup ends the Pioneers' season while Hendrix will advance to the conference semifinals against host Centre College. Transylvania concludes their season with a record of 1-15 and an 0-8 mark in SAA play.
