Ferrum, Va. --- On a beautiful fall afternoon the Pioneers traveled to Virginia to battle Ferrum College in field hockey action. After showing progress throughout the season and being committed to improvement, all of those things came together as Transylvania University won its first game of the season, 3-1.
Freshman Midfielder Alyson Bergman got the Pioneers on the board with the first score of the game on an unassisted goal at 13:04. The Pioneers continued to cash in on momentum by scoring their second goal of the period just ten minutes later. Jessica Chandler found the back of the net on a crossing shot set up by Kayla Thurlow. The Pioneers would go into the half with a two goal lead. Coming out of the break, Ferrum pulled within one on a goal by Sierra Magdaleno at 42:55. With the offense firing on all cylinders, the Pioneers punched in the winning margin goal at 52:20 by Senior Faye Katz. Katz was set up by a perfect pass from teammate Jessica Chandler for the third goal of the game. The Pioneer defense clamped down the rest of the Ferrum offense not allowing any shots in the final 17 minutes to preserve the victory. Allyson Benz successfully saved both of the Ferrum shots in the second half.
Speaking on her team win today, Head Coach Sarah Humphries praised her team; "Today was a solid effort by every person. Our midfield worked tirelessly helping in the transition. Our forwards applied constant pressure to their defense and did a great job in the recovery defense. The defense played solid and really gave it their all. The goalies were strong today anchoring the D. We've been working hard all season and I'm glad today we got the result we deserved."
Transylvania (1-9, 0-6 SAA) continues it road swing to take on the Roanoke Maroons on Monday, October 19th. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
