LEXINGTON, Ky. --- On a crisp fall afternoon the Pioneers honored their three senior's players during halftime ceremonies against Wooster College. Seniors goalkeeper Katie Jackel, Midfielder Faye Katz, and Midfielder Kayla Thurlow were recognized by Transylvania University Athletics, coaches and fans for their commitment to the university and the field hockey team.
Moving quickly in the opening minutes of the first half, the Pioneers wasted no time in getting on the board with a score by Caroline Patrick. Patrick scooped up a deflection off the Wooster goaltender to find the back of the goal for a Pioneer lead at 4:02. Wooster would use a long pass to catch a moving Lauren Abbott who tied the score, 1-1, at 20:42. Despite some magnificent saves by Katie Jackel who faced a barrage of point-blank shots, the Fighting Scots would net two goals in less than a minute to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
The second half would bring a series of defensive skirmishes throughout most of the half until Midfielder Jessica Chandler punched a deflection in past the Fighting Scots goalie to pull the Pioneers within one, 3-2. The Pioneer defense unit of Sarah Shea, Lexie Rodgers, and Kayla Thurlow made things much tighter for Wooster, and anchored by Goaltender Allyson Benz kept the visitors scoreless in the second half. In one furious Wooster attack, Benz made multiple saves including a diving cross-body stop dive to prevent Wooster goal. Despite a fantastic effort by the Pioneers, Wooster would add a goal with: 20 left to make the final score of 4-2.
Transylvania (1-11, 0-6 SAA) will take the field again at Pat Deacon Stadium against Hendrix College for a Halloween game on Saturday, October 31th. Match time is set for 11 a.m.
