SAA Field Hockey Conference Tournament Preview: Pioneers head to Hendrix for Friday first round game vs. Sewanee

Field Hockey Tournament Preview


Conway, Ark. – The Transylvania field hockey team is ready to embark upon a journey through the 2018 Southern Athletic Association Field Hockey conference tournament which begins on Friday, November 2 on the campus of Hendrix College.

Transylvania completed its regular-season run through the SAA this past Thursday with a 7-0 loss to the SAA regular-season champion Centre College Colonels. With the loss, the Pioneers fell to 0-5 in SAA play, placing them as the No. 6 seed in the six-team conference tournament, hosted by No. 5 seed Hendrix.

The Pioneers will face Sewanee (4-13, 1-5 SAA) in Friday's 5:00 p.m. Eastern time SAA quarterfinal match, with the winner advancing to face No. 2 Rhodes College (10-3, 4-1 SAA) on Saturday.

The SAA Tournament wraps up on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Eastern with the championship game; the winner will secure the conference's automatic qualifying bid and earn a berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Transylvania and Sewanee have faced off twice this season already, with the Tigers taking 1-0 victories in both the October 14 and October 21 meetings.

Leading the Pioneers into the postseason is senior goalie Allyson Benz (Mason, Ohio / Mount Notre Dame), who leads the SAA in saves with a staggering 195 on the season, and ranks third in all of NCAA DIII in saves per game (13.71). Additionally, the senior ranks third in the SAA in save percentage (.753). Benz capped off a stellar season with a career-high 28 saves in the Pioneers loss to Centre on October 25.

Offensively, the Pioneers are led by sophomore midfielder Audrey Denham (Louisville, Ky. / Presentation Academy), who has scored a team-high four goals on the season. Denham also recorded an assist in the Pioneers' 4-2 loss to Earlham on September 27.

The SAA Tournament will be held at the Warrior Turf Field from November 2-4 in Conway, Arkansas.
