Benz named SAA Defensive Player of the Year, Domato named All-SAA Second Team for Transylvania Field Hockey

Atlanta, Ga. – Following a prolific season in goal, senior Allyson Benz of the Transylvania field hockey team has been selected as the Southern Athletic Association's Defensive Player of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday.

Benz, a senior from Mason, Ohio (Mount Notre Dame HS), earned her fourth All-SAA selection and her second straight All-SAA first team award. The senior led the conference in total saves (232), and ranked third in save percentage (.751), Benz also recorded one shutout on the year for the Pioneers.

Additionally, Benz led the SAA and finished the season ranked second in all of NCAA DIII in saves per game (14.31). The senior posted a career-high 28 saves twice and recorded double-digit stops 11 times over the course of the season. Benz completes her time at Transylvania with 646 career saves.

Also receiving All-Conference honors was junior defender Ellie Domato, who was named to the All-SAA second team for defense for a second straight year.

Domato, a junior from Louisville, Kentucky (Kentucky Country Day School) started all 16 games for Transylvania this season and was a key component of the Pioneers' defense. Domato led the team and ranked second in the SAA with eight defensive saves on the season.

The Transylvania field hockey team completed its season last Saturday with a loss to Rhodes in the SAA semifinals. It was the Pioneers' third trip to the SAA semifinal round in the past four seasons.
