Gilbert, Ariz. – Nine members of the Transylvania field hockey team were named to the 2018 Zag Field Hockey / NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad.
In a Wednesday announcement by the NFHCA, the organization unveiled a list of 147 different Division III programs and over 1,700 student-athletes who qualified for the award, which includes nine members of the 2018 Transylvania field hockey team.
The Pioneers who qualified for this year's National Academic Squad are senior goalkeeper Allyson Benz, senior midfielder Alyson Bergman, freshman defender Emily Cannon, junior midfielder Tori Coleman, sophomore midfielder Audrey Denham, junior defender Annebelle Klein, sophomore forward Lilly Kramer, senior midfielder Caroline Patrick, and freshman midfielder Molly Uhls.
Patrick finished her career winning National Academic Squad honors for all four years and it is the third year that Bergman has received the honor.
In order to merit inclusion onto the National Academic squad, an NCAA Division III field hockey player must have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or higher through the first semester of the 2018-19 academic year.
First-year head coach Katie Hastings was thrilled with her team's academic accomplishments from this past season. "I'm very excited to see that nine of our players are being recognized for their contributions in the classroom," reflected Hastings."
"Our three seniors, Ally, Allison, and Caroline have clearly set the example for our underclassmen," remarked Hastings. "It's great to see the importance of academic success engrained in our student-athletes here at Transy. I'm very proud of their contributions made on the field and in the classroom!"
The Pioneers finished the 2018 season last October by appearing in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament semifinals.
