Men's Basketball comeback falls short in conference opener against Bluffton, 81-79

BLUFFTON, Ohio. --- The Transylvania University Men's Basketball team traveled to conference rival Bluffton as part of a doubleheader action in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule opener.  The men's team looked to get back into the win column and stop a two game losing streak.

First half action saw both teams in a basket-for-basket tradeoff for well into the first half with neither team gaining and advantage.  The Pioneers would hold the home team close in the first 15 minutes with Alex Jones scoring 10 points until Bluffton would pull away with a 14-2 run in the final five minutes to lead going into halftime 41-28.  The Pioneers would shoot 37.5 percent from the field with Cooper Theobald adding seven points.  Michael Stafford and Robert Dence would each grab four rebounds in the half.

The second half would see the Pioneers get hot from the outside in shooting 61 percent from the field, to include 4-8 from behind the arc.  Alex Jones would continue with the hot hand scoring 16 points in the half on 54 percent shooting from the field.  Bluffton would maintain a solid lead in the first part of the half, but would see if slowly dwindle down as the Pioneers would slowly chip away at the lead making the best of scoring chances after key Bluffton turnovers.  Over the final five minutes of regulation, Transylvania would cut the 70-60 lead down to one, 80-79 on a tip in by Theobald but ran out of time before the opportunity to tie the score.  Bluffton would add an additional point to make the final score 81-79.

Alex Jones would lead all scorers with 26 points and adding four assists.  Cooper Theobald would add 17 points, and Parker Stansberry would chip in with 14 points.  Transylvania shot 48 percent for the game on 29-60, and 5-13 from behind the arc.

The Pioneers return to action at the Clive M. Beck center on Wednesday, December 9 to battle conference rival Hanover.  Tipoff is at 7:30p.m.
