RICHMOND, Ind. – Transylvania's starting five all posted double-digit scoring nights as the Pioneers overpowered the Earlham Quakers 76-66 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference meeting.
With the win at Schuckman Court, the Pioneers achieved their first road victory of the season and improved to 2-3 in HCAC play.
Cooper Theobald, Robert Dence, and Alex Jones each contributed 15 points to the winning effort at Earlham. Theobald had a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, along with three steals and two assists. Theobald advanced to the charity stripe with regularity, shooting 9-for-10 from the free throw line.
Dence's line of 15 points was a season-high output, which came on 5-for-6 shooting from the field along with a 5-for-7 effort from the free throw line.
The undermanned Pioneers utilized a nine-man roster to build a 42-31 lead at the half. Dence and Jones combined to shoot 8-for-15 from the field in the first 20 minutes to provide the scoring punch for the visiting team.
Leading by four with two minutes remaining in the first half, the Pioneers erupted for an 8-0 run to close the period, led by a parade of Theobald free throws which sandwiched layups by Jones and Stansberry.
Theobald registered another nine points in the second half as Transylvania shot 50 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes to maintain a double-digit lead for most of the period.
Earlham never drew closer than an eight point margin in the second half as Transylvania won the rebounding battle 17 to 11 in the final half. The Pioneers took firm command of the boards, outrebounding the Quakers 41 to 24, including 13 offensive boards by Brian Lane's squad.
With the win, Transylvania improves to 3-9 as they return to Beck Center for a tussle with Defiance this Saturday at 3:00pm.
