Greenville, Ill. – The Transylvania men's team gears up for its third game of the 2016-17 season on Monday evening when its visits the Greenville College Panthers at 7:00 p.m.
The Pioneers are 1-1 in their young season, coming off of last Monday's 79-71 defeat on the road at Centre College. Senior guard Alex Jones led the way in that contest with 19 points, 15 of which came in a sizzling first half.
Greenville is 4-1 entering Monday's bout with the Pioneers, most recently coming off of a high-flying 151-128 loss at Grinnell.
The Pioneers are led in scoring through two games by Jones, who is averaging 21 points per contest and shooting 42 percent from the field. Sophomore point guard Cooper Theobald has spearheaded an all-around effort with 18.5 points per game.
Theobald has also continued a procession to the free throw line to begin his second campaign with the Pioneers: after setting the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference record in free throws made as a freshman, Theobald is averaging 13.5 attempts per game this season.
Five Pioneers are currently averaging double-digit scoring, with three newcomers pitching in. Freshman guard Spencer McKinney is third on the Pioneers in scoring at 13.5 ppg, shooting 50 percent from the field, while fellow freshman guard Gabe Schmitt is averaging 11.5 ppg through two games, and sophomore Kyle Gullett is averaging 10 ppg.
