Greenwood, Ind. – Transylvania men's basketball senior guard Alex Jones has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending January 22.
Jones, a senior guard from Louisville, Kentucky, had two outstanding performances the past week as he led the Pioneers to a pair of wins against Mt. St. Joseph and Rose-Hulman, both coming on the road.
Jones scored a season-high 29 points in Wednesday's 92-87 road win at Mt. St. Joseph. Jones scored 22 of his 29 points in the second half and shot 4-for-5 from three-point range to push the Pioneers to victory. His performance was key in handing the Lions just their second conference loss of the season to drop them out of first place in conference. Jones also provided seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals in the victory.
The senior followed up that showing with a game-high 25 points in Saturday's 103-95 win at Rose-Hulman. Jones topped his three-point total on Wednesday by shooting 6-for-9 from three-point land on Saturday. Jones also matched his career-high with 12 assists in the win to go with two rebounds and two steals.
For the week, Jones totaled 54 points, nine rebounds, 18 assists, and four steals as the Pioneers notched their first 10-game winning streak in five years.
The Player of the Week award is the first of the season for Jones and the fourth time in his career he has won the award. Jones joins sophomore guard Cooper Theobald (week of Jan. 8) in capturing a Player of the Week award in 2016-17.
Jones and the Pioneers return to gameplay this Wednesday as they visit the Earlham College Quakers in Richmond, Indiana. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
