Tunica, Miss. – Spencer McKinney was in the top of his class to begin the first day of play at the 2019 Rhodes College Fall Classic at Tunica National, firing a two-round score of 143 over two rounds on Sunday afternoon for the Transylvania men's golf team to claim a sixth-place standing on the individual leaderboard.
McKinney shot an even-par 72 in the first round on Sunday morning and topped his own standards with a one-under-par 71 in the afternoon round to finish in a five-way tie for sixth place on the 104-player leaderboard with a final 18-round session remaining for Monday at Tunica.
The senior turned in a memorable performance on Sunday highlighted by a string of three consecutive birdies on 11th through 13th holes in the second round to propel his one-under-par finish.
McKinney's showing boosted the Pioneers to a share of 16th place after the first round of play; Transylvania delivered a two-round score of 613, shooting a 308 in the morning round and improving upon that score by three strokes in the afternoon with a 305.
Michael Collins continued his sterling freshman campaign, shooting a four-over-par 76 in the first round and a 77 in the second round. Collins holed 11 pars in the second round to finish in a tie for 49th place.
Tim Alexander shot an 80 in the first round and followed with a 77 in Sunday's second round for a two-round 157 to finish in a tie for 70th place with one round to go.
Jeb Brumley scored an 80 in the first two rounds to finish in a four-way tie for 80th place on the player leaderboard. Harrison Lane rounded out the Pioneer group with a 164 entering the final round of play.
The Pioneers will take the course at Tunica for a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. for the third and final round of competition.
