Riggs nets three in ORLC win over St. Vincent

LATROBE, Penn.—Zack Riggs led the Pioneers with three goals, as the Transylvania University men's lacrosse team picked up a 6-3 win over St. Vincent Saturday at SVC Turf.

With the win, the Pioneers move to 6-6 on the season and 2-1 in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference play.

A goal from Zach Roby gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead with 5:45 left in the first quarter. A save from Cooper Fogle gave Transy possession and the offense generated multiple shots before Roby connected.

St. Vincent tied the game at one apiece just over three minutes later with a goal from Nick Pensyl. After a Transylvania penalty, St. Vincent converted on the man-up opportunity to take a 2-1, but the Pioneers answered quickly.

Riggs tied the game at two with 7:44 remaining in the first half after Roby scooped a ground ball to keep possession with Transy and that would be the score at the break.

Less than a minute into play in the second half, the Pioneers converted on man-up goal of their own from Clark Watts giving Transy the lead for good.  More solid defensive play limited St. Vincent's possessions and helped the Pioneers add to their lead.

Watts connected with Riggs for another Transy goal at the 9:32 mark in the third quarter extending the Pioneer lead to 4-2. Sam Ives won the following faceoff for the Pioneers and scooped the groundball, allowing Clay Douthat to find Roby for the score putting Transy up 5-2 with 9:09 left in the third.

As time wound under five minutes left in the third, St. Vincent closed the lead back to two, 5-3. Early in the fourth period, however, Riggs and the Transy offense converted on another man-up opportunity.

Two St. Vincent penalties gave the already efficient Transy offense and the Pioneers capitalized yet again. Ben Erwin found Riggs for the score with 11:04 remaining to put the Pioneers up 6-3 on their way to another conference win.

Fogle logged 17 saves in the win on 34 St. Vincent shots. The Pioneers host Thiel College in an ORLC contest April 18 at Pat Deacon Stadium. Saturday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
