Lexington, KY —The Transylvania University men's lacrosse team got a dominant performance from junior midfielder Zack Riggs as they defeated the Piedmont Lions 7-2 in the season opener at Pat Deacon Stadium on Saturday.
Riggs lead the team with three goals and two assists on the day while junior attacker Clark Watts added two goals and an assist. Zach Roby and Ben Erwin each put in one goal to round out the scoring for Transylvania.
The Pioneers produced a massive offensive effort, outshooting the Lions 59-10 on the day. Transylvania was especially dominant in the second half of the game, taking 28 shots to Piedmont's two.
Early in the first quarter Transylvania fell behind 1-0 on a goal by Taylor Carter. But Piedmont's only lead of the day would be short lived. The Pioneers tied the game up under a minute later with a goal from Zach Roby. Goals by Erwin and Watts would make the score 3-1 in favor of Transylvania after the first quarter.
The second quarter took a more defensive tone as the score held at 3-1. The Pioneers came out for the second half ready to put the game away. Riggs took the opening face-off and scored only 10 seconds into the half. Transylvania added two more goals in the quarter to grow the advantage to 6-2 after three quarters of action.
With 13:39 left in the game Riggs scored the final goal of the game, completing his hat-trick, and growing the advantage to 7-2.
The Pioneers achieved the start to the season they desired, now 1-0 after their season opener.
Next up the Pioneers will host Berry College in an out-of-conference game next Saturday at Pat Deacon Stadium, scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
