Lexington, Ky. – In what proved to be a physical and uptempo contest, the Transylvania men's lacrosse team fell to the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets, 8 to 3 at Pat Deacon Stadium on Wednesday night.
Freshman midfielders Jack Stevenson, Thompson Summers, and T.J. Toivonen each scored a goal for the Pioneers. Summers now leads the Pioneers with five goals on the season, while Stevenson and Toivonen have each recorded two goals. Toivonen also recorded seven groundballs on the day.
The game stated with the Yellow Jackets showing their might against the Pioneers, striking consistently with three goals in the first 15 minutes of play.
The second quarter played out much like the first, as Baldwin Wallace added three more goals to its tally while outshooting the Pioneers 14 to 3 in the quarter.
The Pioneers' offense came to life in the second half as Stevenson's shot found the back of the net with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Freshman attack Trenton Sneed assisted on the goal.
The Pioneers cut into the 8-1 Baldwin Wallace lead in the fourth quarter, as a pair of goals from Toivonen and Summers cut the final deficit to 8-3.
While withstanding the constant pressure from the Yellow Jackets' offense, senior goalkeeper Cooper Fogle collected 11 saves and two groundballs.
The loss moves Transylvania's record to 1-3 with just one game remaining before the start of Ohio River Lacrosse Conference play.
Up next, Transylvania will travel to Demorest, Georgia to face the Piedmont College Lions in a spring break matchup on Tuesday March 14. Opening face-off between the Pioneers and the Lions is set for 4:00 p.m. at the Walker Athletic Complex.
