Lexington, Ky. – After a strong start to the evening, the Transylvania men's lacrosse team faded down the stretch as the Pioneers dropped a 12-6 result to the Capital University Crusaders on Wednesday night at Pat Deacon Stadium.
Leading the Pioneers on offense was freshman midfielder Kayd Aquino, who scored two goals on the night in addition to scooping two ground balls and causing a turnover.
Sophomore attacker Trenton Sneed added some offensive punch on Wednesday, scoring a goal and recording an assist in the loss.
The Crusaders jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead just minutes into the game. The Pioneers responded with a pair of goals from Aquino and sophomore midfielder Jack Stevenson that evened the score at 2-2 with 5:20 to play in the first quarter.
Capital responded by going on a 6-1 scoring run that pushed the Crusaders' lead to 8-3 early in the third quarter.
After Aquino's second goal of the day which came at the 6:31 mark of the third quarter, Capital added three more goals to pad its lead.
Reigning Ohio River Men's Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Week T.J. Toivonen turned in another strong defensive performance for the Pioneers that consisted of six groundballs and five caused turnovers.
With tonight's loss, the Pioneers' record falls to 3-4 overall on the season and 1-0 in the ORLC, while the Crusaders improve to 3-3 on the year.
Up next, the Pioneers return to ORLC play as they host the St. Vincent College Bearcats on Sunday afternoon, March 25. First face-off between the Pioneers and the Bearcats is set for 1:00 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.
