Avon, Conn. - Transylvania men's lacrosse sophomore long-stick midfielder T.J. Toivonen has been selected by the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association as an All-Region defense honorable mention for the Mid-Atlantic region, the IMLCA announced on Tuesday.
Toivonen is the first player in the six-year existence of the Transylvania men's lacrosse program to earn All-Region acclaim.
A sophomore from Sherwood, Oregon (Sherwood HS), Toivonen led the Pioneers to their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and a 9-1 run in Ohio River Lacrosse Conference play.
A versatile defender and midfielder, Toivonen led the ORLC with 55 caused turnovers and finished third in conference in ground balls with 97 pickups. Toivonen helped the Pioneers record 318 clears, good for an 85 percent clear rate.
Toivonen added 13 goals and four assists in his sophomore campaign for the Pioneers. Through the regular season, Toivonen propelled the Pioneers to being one of the top-40 defenses in the country as Transylvania held opponents to under eight goals per game. Over the regular season, Toivonen ranked 10th in the country in caused turnovers per game (2.83).
Toivonen was recognized for his performances last month by being chosen as the ORLC Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-ORLC First Team for the second straight season.
The Pioneers completed the 2018 season in May with an overall record of 12-7, their fourth consecutive ORLC conference tournament title, and a string of nine wins in their final 11 contests.
