Lexington, Ky. – Junior midfielder T.J. Toivonen and junior attack Trenton Sneed have each been selected as Week One winners for the Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference's Player of the Week awards.
Toivonen was named the HCLC Defensive Player of the Week while Sneed earned HCLC Offensive Player of the Week honors to lead Transy in sweeping the player of the week awards.
The first release of the weekly awards takes into account all games from the start of the season leading up to Sunday, March 2. During that span, Toivonen (Sherwood, Ore. / Sherwood HS) and Sneed (Milford, Ohio / Milford HS) have each posted multiple star performances to earn their individual recognition.
Sneed's opening month of the season was highlighted by a career-high five-goal performance in a 15-7 win for Transylvania over Wittenberg at home this past Saturday. Sneed provided an assist and a goal in the opening quarter to help propel the Pioneers to 4-1 lead that they would maintain for the rest of the afternoon. Sneed finished the game with six points to help the Pioneers defeat Wittenberg for the first time in program history.
Over the first three games of the season, Sneed has tallied seven goals and five assists for a total of 12 points to lead the conference in points and assists.
Toivonen opened the season with eight ground balls, six caused turnovers, one goal, and one assist in Transylvania's 16-7 win over Augustana. Toivonen led a defense that forced Augustana into 30 turnovers and 19 failed clears.
In Transylvania's other win of the season which came against Wittenberg, Toivonen recorded 10 ground balls, three caused turnovers, and added another goal. Over his first three games, Toivonen has tallied 19 ground balls (3rd in HCLC), 10 caused turnovers, and three points.
This is the fourth conference player of the week award of Toivonen's career. As a sophomore Toivonen captured player of the week honors three times during the 2017-18 season. It is the second time Sneed has been chosen player of the week and the first time since the 2016-17 season.
The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday, March 6 as they host Albion College at Pat Deacon Stadium in a nonconference matchup. Face-off is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.
