Sewanee, Tenn. – The Transylvania men's lacrosse team rallied back from a three-goal deficit in the second quarter to author a 9-7 victory over the Sewanee Tigers on Friday night at Hardee-McGee Field.
Kayd Aquino caught fire for a career-high four goals and added an assist as the Pioneers earned their first program win over Sewanee in three meetings. The night also witnessed the first Pioneer men's lacrosse player to reach triple digits in career assists as Trenton Sneed recorded the 99th and 100th assists of his illustrious career in Friday's win.
Transylvania improved to 8-3 on the year as the Pioneers picked up their fourth nonconference victory of the 2019 campaign while Sewanee dropped to 7-4 overall.
The Pioneers opened the lid on scoring as Aquino began making his way to a hat-trick with an unassisted score less than three minutes into the match to put the Pioneers ahead, 1-0. Aquino's goal would serve as a lifeline for Transylvania as Sewanee reeled off three unanswered goals to end the first quarter and put the Pioneers in a two-goal hole. The Tigers continued to growl as they opened up the second quarter with another goal to punch the Pioneers near the corner with a 4-1 outlook.
But the Pioneers swung back with a momentum-changing final seven minutes of the half to reassume control. The Pioneers acted quickly as Sneed rifled a quick pass to Joe Shermock for a point-blank goal to lessen Sewanee's advantage to 4-2 with 6:57 remaining. Sewanee answered with another goal for a 5-2 lead but Aquino struck again with 4:45 to go before the half to slice Sewanee's advantage to 5-3.
Transylvania issued one final salvo as AJ Teague sprinted past a slew of helpless defenders and scored a scintillating goal just before the halftime buzzer sounded, cutting Sewanee's lead to 5-4 heading into halftime.
The Pioneers harnessed their newfound momentum to begin the second half as Aquino scored his third and fourth goals of the game around a man-down goal by Webb VanMeter to cap off a 5-0 scoring run, stunning the Tigers.
Sewanee found its first score of the second half with 2:50 remaining in the third quarter, but Sneed pioneered a new milestone with an assist to Alex Cherry with a half-minute remaining in the third quarter to lift Transy's lead to 8-6.
With his second assist of the night, Sneed became the first Pioneer to reach 100 career assists, doing so in his junior season. Sneed also stands second among all Pioneers past and present in career points.
Aquino set up Shermock for a critical goal with 7:44 left in the fourth quarter, giving Transylvania a 9-6 lead. Though it would be Transy's lone goal of the final quarter, the Pioneers showed off their defensive wherewithal to hold Sewanee to a solo score in the fourth quarter as well, securing an impressive road win.
Shermock finished the night with two goals while Logan Fogle led the Pioneers with six ground balls and two caused turnovers. Michael Webb moved to 7-2 on the year as the sophomore goalie claimed 11 saves.
The Pioneers forced Sewanee into 27 turnovers, winning the turnover margin by seven and won 14 of 20 face-offs on the night.
Transylvania continues its schedule on Wednesday, April 3 as the Pioneers visit the Centre College Colonels in Danville, Kentucky. Opening face-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
