NEW CONCORD, Ohio. – The Transylvania men's soccer team made use of a well-balanced offensive attack as they defeated the Muskingum Muskies 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at McConagha Stadium.
The Pioneers attack was led by freshman defender Jason Murillo, who recorded four points in the match.
Transylvania wasted little time in asserting their dominance over the Fighting Muskies, as Murillo scored just two minutes into the game off an assist from junior midfielder Jacob Gantt. Murillo would add a second goal just minutes later off an assist from senior midfielder Matt Melzer, giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead five minutes into the game.
After scoring two goals himself, Murillo turned his attention to passing, as he assisted freshman forward Alex Shkraba, who scored the Pioneers third goal in the first ten minutes of action.
The offensive clinic would continue throughout the first half, as junior midfielder Josh Morgan added a score of his own at the 24:06 minute mark. Senior forward Blake Chidester capped off the dominant Transylvania first-half by adding a pair of goals to make the halftime score 6-0 in favor of Transylvania. Chidester was assisted on the goals by Murillo and Tyler-Joy Brandon.
Determined to preserve the clean-sheet, the Pioneers settled in defensively for the second half. The defensive pressure of the Pioneers was rewarded; freshman goalkeepers Drew Grisham received his first start of the season and held the Muskies scoreless for the first 58-plus minutes of the game before being replaced by fellow freshman Ryan Hughes. For the final half hour, Hughes supplied three more saves as the two keepers teamed up to hold a Transylvania opponent scoreless for the fifth time in six games.
On the afternoon, Transylvania attempted 12 shots on goal, compared to just four by Muskingum.
The Pioneers' record now stands at 4-0-2, with only two games remaining before Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play begins.
The Pioneers aim to remain undefeated as they continue their road trip on Thursday, Sept. 22 to face the Thomas More Saints. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. from BB&T Field.
