Anderson, Ind. – The Transylvania men's soccer team required seven minutes of extra time to earn a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Anderson University Ravens at the AU Soccer Fields on Saturday afternoon.
The victory moves the Pioneers' record to 13-1 overall and 6-1 in Heartland Colligate Athletic Conference play with just two games remaining in the regular season.
The game got off to a slow start as both teams were held to just one shot on goal in the first half.
The Pioneers looked primed to make their move in the second half, recording eight shots on goal in comparison to only one for the Ravens. However, both defenses continued to hold strong, and the game went to overtime with each team still scoreless.
A familiar protagonist came to the rescue in extra time as Transylvania senior midfielder Riley Calhoon scored his 13th goal of the season off of a throw-in from junior midfielder Jonathan Rase in the 97th minute, giving the Pioneers a sudden 1-0 victory.
Calhoon continues to lead the HCAC in both goals with 13, and points with 27 on the season.
A constant bright spot throughout the season, the Transylvania defensive line continued to hold strong for the Pioneers as it limited the Ravens to only two shots on goal in the contest.
Up next the Pioneers will return to Lexington to face the Earlham College Quakers on Wednesday, October 25. The matchup between the Pioneers and the Quakers is set for 7:00 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.
