Transylvania men's soccer overwhelms Mount St. Joseph in second half at home


Lexington, Ky. – A second-half offensive explosion propelled the Transylvania men's soccer team to a 6-2 victory over the Mount St. Joseph University Lions at Pat Deacon Stadium on Wednesday night.

The victory lifts Transylvania's record to 4-4-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, while the Lions fall to 3-9-1 and 2-2 in the HCAC.

Leading the way for the Pioneers was senior midfielder Jonathan Rase, who recorded three assists and a goal for a total of five points on the night.

Transylvania outshot the Lions 21-7 in the game and held a staggering 15-0 advantage in corner kicks earned.

Mount St. Joseph took an early 1-0 lead when Alonzo Garcia Alvarez scored in the 10th minute following a Lions throw in. 

Despite several chances, the Pioneers were unable to find an equalizer and the score remained 1-0 going into the halftime break.

In the 53rd minute, Rase sent a free kick into the box that sophomore midfielder Garrett Dean flicked into the back of the net off the outside of his foot to level the score at 1-1.

The Lions retook the lead in the 55th minute with a goal from Nathan Schmeusser. However, Transylvania responded just five minutes later when Rase scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Luc Powell, spurring a string of four goals within a 16-minute span.

The Pioneers captured the lead for good in the 62nd minute when junior forward Alex Shkraba received a pass from Rase and blasted a shot into the back of the net.

Transylvania extended its lead to 4-2 when sophomore midfielder DJ Sanders sent a beautiful pass across the face of the goal and towards senior forward Thomas Shellenberg who fired a shot past the Lions' goalie.

Over the final 24 minutes of play, the duo of Shkraba and freshman forward Trent Saylor added a pair of insurance goals to extend the Pioneers' final margin of victory to 6-2.

With the win, Transylvania freshman goalie Michael Kline evened his season record at 2-2. Kline recorded one save in 90 minutes of action.

The Pioneers will continue their current homestand when they face the Defiance College Yellow Jackets on Saturday, October 13. Prior to the game, the Pioneers will honor their four seniors with a Senior Day ceremony. First touch between the Pioneers and the Yellow Jackets is set for 1:00 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.
