HCAC Men's Soccer Tournament Preview: #2 seed Pioneers welcome #3 Rose-Hulman back to Lexington for latest chapter

OFFICIAL HCAC MEN'S TOURNAMENT HEADQUARTERS

Lexington, Ky. – Following another strong regular-season campaign, the Transylvania men's soccer team prepares for the next chapter of the 2018 season as it kicks off the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday, October 30 at home.

The Pioneers posted a record of 8-4-4 overall and 6-1-2 in the HCAC and will open the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed, hosting the No. 3 seed Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers at Pat Deacon Stadium on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.

Under the direction of fifth-year head coach and former Transylvania men's soccer player Matt Vogel, Transylvania is in pursuit of its second straight conference tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth.

The semifinal matchup between the Pioneers and the Fightin' Engineers presents a rematch of this past Saturday's regular-season finale between the two teams which ended in a 0-0 draw. Tuesday's upcoming tournament meeting is also a rematch of last season's HCAC championship game, in which the Pioneers clinched a 2-1 victory in double overtime to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

Entering Tuesday's match, Rose-Hulman boasts a record of 9-6-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the HCAC, and are led on offense by Travis Bednarek and Michel Farhat, each of whom have tallied six goals on the season.

Transylvania comes into Tuesday's matchup touting a balanced offensive attack, led by junior striker
Alex Shkraba
, who leads the team with six goals on the season. Shkraba posted a brace in the Pioneers' 6-2 victory over Mt. St. Joseph on October 10.

Additional offensive threats for the Pioneers come in the form of senior midfielder Thomas Shellenberg and junior forward Charlie Wend, a duo which has each scored three goals on the season.

Junior goalkeeper Drew Grisham has been stellar in goal for Transylvania throughout the season, recording 37 saves against just 13 goals allowed in 12 starts this season. Touting a record of 6-2-4, Grisham ranks second in the HCAC with a 1.03 goals-against average, and fourth in save percentage with a mark of .740%.

The Pioneers and Fightin' Engineers will face off on Tuesday for a trip to the HCAC Tournament Championship match to be held Saturday, November 4. The championship match will take place at the home of the highest seed remaining after the semifinal round. The No. 1 seed Hanover Panthers take on the No. 4 seed Manchester Spartans for the right to take on the Transy-Rose-Hulman winner.

Tickets for Tuesday's game are available for purchase at the entryway to Pat Deacon Stadium. Admission is $8 for adults, and $5 for children aged 12-17 and senior citizens. Admission is free for children aged 11 and under. Staff, students, and faculty who have a university ID card from an HCAC member institution are also admitted at no charge.
