Midway, Ky. – The Transylvania men's tennis team earned its first victory of the season by defeating the Midway University Eagles in a hotly-contested 5-4 decision at the Thomas R. Post Tennis Complex on Saturday morning.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead in the pro-style match as junior Brandon Stofleth and senior Eric Sandknop claimed an 8-5 victory in No. 2 doubles action, followed by an 8-6 victory in No. 3 doubles for sophomore Edis Sinanovic and senior J.T. Henderson.
The singles portion of the match got off to a rocky start for the Pioneers with Midway claiming victories in both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches.
However, Transylvania recovered with a pair of victories for Sandknop and Stofleth in No. 3 and No. 4 singles action.
Sinanovic clinched the day for Transylvania with a clutch 6-1, 6-4 victory in No. 6 singles, giving Transylvania the 5-4 team victory.
Transylvania head coach Kevin Calhoun was encouraged by his team's showing on Saturday. "I'm really happy for the guys," remarked Calhoun. "Midway is a tough team to play against and we had to maintain our composure when things got tough. It was a total team effort today, and not an easy match."
The Pioneers will return to action on Tuesday, March 20 as they host in-state rival Thomas More College in the team's 2018 home opener. The match is set for a 4:00 p.m. start at Spindletop Hall in Georgetown, Kentucky.
