Pioneers Track and Field aim high in wake of outdoor season preseason polls

Greenwood, Ind. – After a pair of impressive indoor and outdoor seasons, the Transylvania track and field teams have warranted increased attention according to the midweek release of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field preseason polls.

The HCAC unveiled over the past 24 hours the preseason coaches' poll for both the women's and men's 10 outdoor season track and field teams.

The Transylvania women's team has been tabbed to finish fourth out of 10 teams in the upcoming 2017 outdoor track and field season. The Pioneers received 66 out of a possible 100 points.

The Pioneers have soared to new heights, coming off of a fourth-place finish as a team at last month's HCAC Indoor Championships.

Augmenting the Pioneers' viability for a finish of fourth or better is a star-studded lineup led by two seniors; sprinter Jordin Fender is fresh off a second-place finish in the women's 60-meter hurdles event at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, along with her second All-American award. Senior thrower Taylor Sanders enters the outdoor circuit having won the HCAC Indoor Championship in the shot put.

On the men's slate, the Transylvania men's track and field squad has been selected to finish seventh out of 10 teams in HCAC competition. The men's squad received 42 voting points, just behind Franklin College and ahead of Defiance College.

"We are excited to get started with the outdoor season," commented Transylvania track and field head coach Heidi Pinkerton. "The team is on a roll and ready to start competing again. It is great to see the culture and talent of the team grow."

The Pioneers men's side is led by senior Cole Green, who took first-place in the men's 100 and 200-meter events at last year's HCAC Outdoor Championships and HCAC men's track athlete of the year accolades. Joining Green in the Pioneers corps are sophomore Nathan McCullough, and Malik Jackson. Both had impressive showings to close the indoor season, as McCullough and Jackson finished second and third respectively in the triple jump at the HCAC Indoor Championships.

The Transylvania track and field team begins its outdoor schedule on Friday, March 17 when it visits High Point University for a two-day meet. The Pioneers will host the 2017 Pioneer Invitational at Pat Deacon Stadium the following week, beginning Friday, March 24.
