Fender and Green to compete at 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Geneva, Ohio – The Transylvania track and field program is set to make history beginning this Thursday at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the SPIRE Institute.

Seniors Cole Green and Jordin Fender have qualified for the NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Mount Union, which run Thursday, May 25 through Saturday, May 27 in Geneva, Ohio.

Green, a senior from Oak Ridge, Tennessee (Oak Ridge HS) is making his first appearance at an NCAA Championship. A four-time Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Year between the indoor and outdoor circuits, Green qualified for the men's 100 meter competition at the NCAA Championships.

Fender, a senior from Lexington, Kentucky (Dunbar HS), returns for her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and her third straight including this winter's 2017 Indoor Championships held at North Central College.

It is the first time in program history that the Pioneers are sending multiple student-athletes to compete at an NCAA track and field championship event.

A two-time All-American after qualifying for and racing in the finals of the women's 60-meter hurdles (2017 Indoor Championships) and the women's 100-meter hurdles, Fender again will compete in the women's 100-meter race at the upcoming championships. The junior will aim to improve upon her fifth-place finish in the finals of last year's 100-meter hurdle race, as well as a national runner-up finish in the women's 60-meter hurdles at February's indoor championships.

Green qualified for the men's 100 meters by posting the 14th-fastest time this season at the Division III level. Green recorded a 10.63 s race in this season's HCAC Outdoor Championships on April 28 to qualify.

The men's 100 meter prelims will take place Friday at 3:30 p.m. If Green successfully qualifies for finals, that race will begin Saturday at 1:40 p.m.

Fender recorded a personal-best time of 14.44 seconds in the women's 100-meter hurdles at last Thursday's Great Lakes Elite qualifying meet in Delaware, Ohio. That time is tied for the ninth-fastest time nationally in Division III Women's Track and Field this season.

Fender is scheduled to compete in the prelims of the women's 100-meter hurdles on Friday, at 2:15 p.m. The finals for the women's 100-meter hurdles is set for Saturday at 12:50 p.m.
