Lexington, Ky. – Transylvania track and field senior Graham Smith has been selected as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference's Player of the Week for Men's Field events, the conference announced Tuesday.
Smith, a senior thrower from Versailles, Kentucky (Lexington Christian HS) delivered an impressive performance at last Saturday's Transylvania Invitational, the Pioneers' outdoor season-opening event held at Pat Deacon Stadium.
Competing in his first outdoor javelin event of the season, Smith won handily with a throw of 57.94 meters to take first place by more than nine meters over the next closest thrower. The 57.94-meter throw established a new Transylvania program record.
Smith won the javelin throw over a field of competitors from NAIA, NCAA Division III, and Division II schools.
The senior's javelin throw stands as the seventh-longest distance in Division III men's javelin this season, currently slotting him in the qualifying window for NCAA Championships.
The player of the week award is the first for Smith in his career as a Pioneer and the first captured by a Transylvania track and field student-athlete in the 2019 season.
The Transylvania track and field team returns to competition on Saturday, April 6 in Greencastle, Indiana at the DePauw Invitational.
