Berea, Ky. – The Transylvania Cross Country teams ventured down I-75 to kick off their 2016 campaign at the Berea/Centre College Cross Country Kick Off Classic held Friday evening.
The Pioneers women's cross country contingent finished their 2 mile run in 1:09.50 with an average time of 13:58. Transylvania's team was led by sophomore Rebecca Facktor, who completed her run in 13:29.8 minutes.
Facktor was followed closely by junior Elizabeth Deaton and senior Cora Kerber, who each clocked in at 13:45.8 minutes or better.
Also competing for the Pioneers were sophomore Sadie Middleton, junior Riley Bresnahan, and junior Melanie Peterson. Three freshman made their career cross country debuts for Transylvania, including Jennai Mitchell, Ashley Dragan, and Alex Voelker. Mitchell clocked the fastest time of the newcomers with a time of 14:39.4 minutes.
In men's action, a 5K run was held; the Pioneers men's team checked in at ninth place with a team total time of 1:30:34 minutes. Pioneers freshman Charlie Jordan posted the fastest time of his Transylvania peers, finishing in 17:19.9 minutes. Senior Evan Reister followed with a 17:40.2 minute finish.
Transylvania cross country head coach Heidi Pinkerton liked what she saw from her teams' first showing of the fall season: "We have some work to do before conference but I believe we have a solid collection of runners, one through five on both our women's and men's teams," said Pinkerton. "We have a young team with talent that will help keep the point spread close. It will take the men a few races to get into the groove of racing an 8K but I feel good about our chances to get that down soon."
The Pioneers next return to action on September 10 when they visit Hanover for a morning 8K for the men's team and a women's 6K run.
